About The Congo
Located in the region of Central Africa, The Congo is the second largest country in Africa, and the eleventh largest in the world with a population of over 75 million. The second Congo war, also known as The African World War, began in 1998 with fighting continuing through 2007. During this time, the abundance of rape and other assaults was known to be the worst in the world. Unfortunately, these crimes are still largely prevalent. During the conflict of this war, over 5.4 million people had died. 90% of the deaths surprisingly stemmed from causes unrelated to combat. These causes include malaria, diarrhea, malnutrition, and pneumonia. An astonishing, and depressing, 47% of these deaths were those of children 5 years of age and younger. The Congo is largely overpopulated with a lack of access to water, food, shelter, and medicine.
Due to years of Civil War, many citizens have been left displaced. As a result of the chaos and deadly war, the actions taken place in this country have received the label of the humanitarian crisis. Citizens have traveled farther and farther out of their cities in order to stay alive, resulting in over 1.9 million people being displaced. In the year 2009 people of The Congo were dying at a disgusting rate of 45,000 per month. A new study also reports that on average 400,000 woman are raped in the Republic of The Congo every year.
