My name is Emily Atheson. I am a 25 year- old graduate student at Carlow University. I grew up in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area and attended undergraduate studies at a small Liberal Arts school, Thiel College, in Northern Pennsylvania. During my undergraduate studies as a fine arts major, I completed my time there with a senior art show. For this final assignment I studied and composed four pieces of art on child slavery. I was able to educate myself on some of the terrible crimes that take place over the world involving children. Since, I have become extremely interested and open to hearing more about these children and the crimes that take place every day all over the world. I hope to travel to Uganda in the summer of 2015 and work with some of the less fortunate children. I can't imagine what a gratifying and humbling experience this could be. When I had the opportunity to do my final project in Child and Family Culture on anything of my choosing, I did not hesitate for a moment. I knew that I wanted to focus on the children in the Congo, and make more people aware of what dangers they face on a daily basis.
I was able to read a lot, not only about the children and families, but about The Congo itself. The country is such a poor one, which makes the probabilities of anyone living a happy and safe life unlikely. If every one can come together and fight for these people, maybe just maybe they have a chance at a life that we all know they deserve. It starts with catching the attention. So lets begin the fight!
Below I have attached a link to where actor and producer, Ben Affleck, speaks about his time spent educating himself on the conflict of The Congo and traveling there. It is also his goal to bring the attention of the conflict to those of power, so we can begin the fight to give them the help that they so badly need and deserve. It's not money that The Congo needs, it's awareness.
